Bodyweight training – getting fit without equipment

Had enough of crowded gyms, or don't fancy expensive equipment? Then you should try bodyweight training! This training method uses your own body weight as resistance and is one of the most versatile and effective ways to get fit – entirely without extra equipment. Whether at home, in the park or while travelling, bodyweight training can be done anywhere and gives you maximum flexibility.

Before we begin, I'd like to briefly introduce myself: my name is Marco Laterza, I'm a personal trainer in Zurich. I offer my clients support in the areas of exercise, nutrition and mindset. A holistic approach to health and fitness is important to me, and this is a concept I want to pass on to everyone. If you're interested in working together, you can contact me anytime.

What is bodyweight training?

Bodyweight training is based on exercises in which your own body weight serves as resistance. Classic exercises like push-ups, squats, planks and lunges are among the basics. But there are countless variations and ways to progress that make this training equally interesting for beginners and advanced trainees. In doing so you train not just isolated muscles, but whole muscle groups at once, which leads to better coordination and improved interplay of your muscles.

The advantages of bodyweight training

1. Doable anywhere and flexible

One of the biggest advantages of bodyweight training is its flexibility. You need neither dumbbells nor machines and can do your exercises almost anywhere – be it in the living room, outdoors or even in a hotel room while travelling. All you need is a bit of space and your own body.

2. Holistic training

Bodyweight exercises often work several muscle groups at once. With an exercise like the push-up, you train not only your chest, but also shoulders, triceps, abs and even your stabilising muscles. That makes bodyweight training extremely efficient, since you can work more muscle groups in less time. Exercises like planks or burpees in particular are excellent for strengthening your core muscles while also improving your endurance.

3. Suitable for every fitness level

Whether you're just starting out or already advanced – bodyweight training can be adapted to every fitness level. Beginners can, for example, do classic squats or push-ups on their knees, while advanced trainees can integrate single-leg squats (pistols) or dynamic planks into their training to increase the challenge.

4. No more excuses

Because you need no gym or special equipment for bodyweight training, there are hardly any excuses not to train. You can integrate your workout into your everyday life, no matter how full your schedule is. Even short 10- or 20-minute sessions are effective if you do them regularly.

The most important bodyweight exercises

Here are some fundamental bodyweight exercises you can easily add to your training:

  • Squats: strengthen your legs and glutes. Make sure to perform the exercise cleanly by not pushing your knees over your toes.
  • Push-ups: a classic exercise that mainly trains the chest, shoulders and arms. Beginners can start on their knees, while advanced trainees can increase the difficulty by elevating their feet or doing one-arm push-ups.
  • Plank: a great exercise for the entire core. Keep your body in a straight line and brace your abs firmly to achieve the maximum effect.
  • Lunges: train the legs and glutes while at the same time improving balance and coordination.
  • Burpees: a demanding exercise that challenges not only the muscles but also the cardiovascular system.

Bodyweight training for muscle growth and fat burning

Many people think you need weights to build muscle, but bodyweight training can be just as effective. With the right technique and progression, you can give your muscles strong growth stimuli even without added weight. Exercises like single-leg squats or close-grip push-ups increase the intensity and make the training more demanding.

For fat burning, bodyweight training is ideal. You can do high-intensity interval training (HIIT), in which you perform exercises like burpees, squat jumps and mountain climbers quickly one after another. This type of training fires up your metabolism and keeps you burning calories even after the workout.

Conclusion

Bodyweight training is an incredibly versatile and effective training method that's perfect for anyone who wants to get fit without investing in expensive equipment or memberships. It's ideal for building muscle, burning fat and improving your overall fitness. Whether beginner or advanced, the options for adaptation make it a form of training that never gets boring.
